WAYNESVILLE, N.C. — The mountains are calling, and the Appalachian True Heritage Festival is answering. Organizers are proud to announce the return of this beloved celebration to the heart of Downtown Waynesville, gathering community members, cultural bearers, artisans, musicians, and storytellers for a two-day immersion in the rich history and living traditions of Western North Carolina.

The Appalachian True Heritage Festival is an annual two-day celebration honoring the history, traditional crafts, and vibrant mountain culture of Western North Carolina. The festival offers a hands-on, educational, and immersive experience that keeps Appalachian heritage alive for future generations.

This year's festival features an exceptional lineup of artists who embody the very soul of Appalachian music. The Darren Nicholson Band brings a masterful blend of bluegrass and mountain roots that resonates deeply with the landscape and legacy of Western North Carolina. Woody Platt and the Bluegrass Gentlemen deliver the kind of warm, authentic, string-driven sound that feels as timeless as the hills themselves — a performance not to be missed by any lover of true mountain music. The Appalachian Roadshow offers a rich, multi-faceted celebration of regional music and storytelling, weaving together the many threads that make Appalachian culture so enduring and distinctive. Rounding out the lineup, Upstream Rebellion brings an energy and spirit that reminds us that mountain music is not only a tradition to be preserved, but a living art form that continues to grow and inspire. A Celebration of Living Heritage

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains along Downtown Waynesville’s Main Street, the festival brings together the very best of Appalachian culture. Attendees can expect hands-on craft demonstrations, live musical performances, storytelling, community gatherings, and the warm hospitality that defines mountain life.

Quilt Trails Haywood County Bus Tour

As part of the festival, we invite patrons to join the Quilt Trails Bus Tour, a scenic journey to explore local quilt blocks, learn regional history, all while enjoying relaxing refreshments on the ride. The Quilt Trails Bus Tour offers a unique way to explore the artistry and heritage of Appalachia by learning about the traditions and history behind the quilt blocks. Tours begin at 10am, 1pm and 4pm; $45/person, plus NC Sales Tax. The Quilt Trails Bus Tour will start and end at the Shelton House, (49 Shelton St). Buy Tickets Here

This year’s festival introduces exciting new features that deepen the experience and bring fresh dimensions to the celebration:

Hand to Heritage: The Art of Appalachian Making

Roll up your sleeves and dive into Appalachian craft traditions with Hand to Heritage, an interactive area featuring live demonstrations and hands-on activities in spinning, weaving, carving, and more. Skilled artisans guide visitors through these time-honored techniques with cultural stories and deep roots behind every stitch and stroke.

Stitch by Stitch: A Community Quilt Show

Held at the historic First Baptist Church of Waynesville, this special exhibit celebrates the heritage and artistry of quilting in Western North Carolina. Featuring works by local quilters alongside selections from the Shelton House’s historic quilt collection, Stitch by Stitch honors the stories, skills, and community connections stitched into every quilt.

Main Street Community Jam: Music from the Mountain Heart

Pull up a chair and let the music wash over you at the Front Porch Jam stage. Rooted in authentic Appalachian tradition, this lively performance area features live music, storytelling, and traditional dancing throughout the festival weekend. Best of all, the community is invited to join in for an open jam session.
