2008 Calendar of Events


Festivals, special events and performances are held frequently in downtown Waynesville, sponsored by the DOWNTOWN WAYNESVILLE ASSOCIATION and other area organizations. Throughout 2008, we are proud to Celebrate Haywood County’s Bicentennial. For more information, call 828-456-3517.

MID MAY – OCT – every Wed-Sat, TAILGATE FARMER’S MARKET. Local growers set up in the parking lot of Badcock Home Furnishings to sell their fresh produce, plant & herbs throughout the summer & fall growing season. 8-Noon.

May - Nov – 1st Friday each month, “ART after DARK” – Downtown galleries remain open until 9 pm, demonstrations, artist receptions, live music. July event will be held on Thurs, July 3.

May 23-26 - Fri - Mon - SIDEWALK SALES downtown – Celebrating Memorial Day Weekend

May 24 - Sat - BLOCK PARTY, Downtown is Alive at Night, dancing in the street with live bands, children’s area, eats & treats, restaurants open, music begins at 7pm, a portion of Main Street is closed.

June 21 - Sat – 13th annual DOWNTOWN STUDIO & GALLERY TOUR. Free walking art tour, watch artists as they work. Refreshments and special artists’ showings. 10am-5pm.

June 13, July 18, Aug 15 – Fri, DOWNTOWN DRIVE-IN, Where the Stars Come Out Twice! Bring your chairs & enjoy free family movies, upper level of the parking deck off Branner Ave. 9pm

June 27, July 11 & 25 and Aug 8 - Fri Nights - 4 MOUNTAIN STREET DANCES. Downtown is Alive at Night. Put on your cloggin’ & square dancin’ shoes and enjoy an old-fashioned mountain hoe down! Live mountain music, demonstrations and instruction by local clogging teams. Refreshments available. Bring a chair or blanket, in front of the Courthouse. 6:30-9pm.

July 4- Fri - STARS & STRIPES CELEBRATION. Main Street – Celebrating Haywood County’s Bicentennial, sidewalk sales, live entertainment, food & fun for all ages throughout the downtown area. 10am-3pm.

July 18 - Fri - FOLKMOOT USA PARADE. Main Street, Dancers and musicians from around the world will parade down Main Street to the Courthouse for the opening ceremonies of FOLKMOOT USA. 1pm

July 26 - Sat - INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL DAY. Main Street, Haywood County Arts Council & FOLKMOOT USA join together to present a daylong extravaganza of music, dance, crafts & food from around the world. 10am-5pm.

Aug. 9 - Sat. – DOWNTOWN DOG WALK. Courthouse lawn, Proceeds go to support the proposed SARGE’s Adoption Center in Haywood, 9:30-1pm, www.sargeandfriends.org

Aug 29 & 30 – Fri & Sat – 37th annual SMOKY MOUNTAIN FOLK FESTIVAL. Two full evenings, celebrating our mountain folk music. Stuart Auditorium, Lake Junaluska

Oct 11- Sat – 25th annual CHURCH STREET ART & CRAFT SHOW. Main Street is transformed into an art & craft marketplace for this one-day event; widely know as one of the finest in the region. Live mountain music & clogging, entertainment & food. 10am-5pm.

Oct 18- Sat - 20th annual APPLE HARVEST FESTIVAL. Main Street. Live mountain music & dance, crafts, demonstration booths, apples, cider, fresh fried pies & other apple delicacies. 10am-5pm.

Nov 10 – Mon – Veteran’s Day Tribute to HAYWOOD CO. VETERANS, featuring Asheville Symphony Orchestra, 7 p.m. in Stuart Auditorium, Lake Junaluska. For more information, call Mr. Richard Miller, The Classic WineSeller, 452-6000

Nov 23 - Sun - "Holiday Open House”. A Holiday Tradition on Main Street. Enjoy the sights, scents & sounds as the holiday season begins in festively decorated shops & galleries. Noon–5 pm

Dec 8 - Mon – Evening Christmas Parade in Downtown Waynesville - Main Street. 6pm

Dec 6 & 13, Sat evenings - “A Night before Christmas". Come share our Holiday Tradition with Us! Caroling, live music, a live Nativity, pictures with Santa, old-fashioned wagon rides, storytelling, poetry & more. Main Street is lined with hundreds of luminaries. Shops & restaurants open until 9pm.


2009 Calendar of Events


April 25, Sat – “Quick Draw” Highly motivated live auction artists start & complete a work of art for sale. Silent auction items available also. Fundraising efforts support local art teachers who inspire seniors to pursue art in college.
