FRIENDS OF THE SMOKIES News - America's top national park cracks 10 million visitors mark. As a prelude to the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service, Great Smoky Mountain National Park welcomed more than 10 million visitors in 2014. Visitation exceeded 10 million for the first time since 2000 and only the fourth time in the park's 80-year history. The Smokies, TN & NC’s shared treasure, is America's most visited national park. The 2014 visitation total was 10,099,275, an 8% increase. July & August were strong, & leaf-peepers produced the biggest OCT in 27 years.
The park's record year was 1999, when 10,283,598 explored corners of the biggest piece of wilderness in the eastern US.
On a related note, NC's state park system drew 15.6 million visitors in 2014, a 10% increase over 2013. "Public lands are some of our region's most valued and most loved attractions. Every destination should develop close working relationships with the stewards of those lands," said Bill Hardman, president and CEO.
